Benin has reaffirmed its support for Haiti by pledging 2,000 troops for the future Multinational Security Support Force in Haiti (MMSS). This decision reflects the strong historical and cultural ties that exist between the two countries, notably through the voodoo religion.
Voodoo, a mystical and spiritual religion, is a powerful link between Benin and Haiti. The totemic divinities common to both countries enable a deep and almost ineffable connection between Beninese and Haitians. This relationship, sometimes described as carnal, has manifested itself on several occasions in acts of solidarity, such as during the 2010 earthquake, when Benin welcomed and cared for Haitian students.
President Patrice Talon's proposal to send 2,000 troops to help curb the violence in Haiti demonstrates his commitment to solidarity, duty and gratitude towards Toussaint Louverture's homeland. His director of intelligence services has even been appointed Benin's special envoy to Haiti, underlining the importance Benin attaches to its relationship with Haiti.
