Sweden will end its aid program in Mali. The announcement was made this Wednesday, August 7, 2024 by Johan Forssell, Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.
"It is inconceivable to support Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine while continuing to receive hundreds of millions of Swedish kronor in development aid"he wrote in a tweet.
This aid covers the period 2021-2025 and is funded to the tune of $190 million.
Subdivided as follows: $185.1 million from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and $4.7 million from the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), a Swedish government agency dedicated to peace and security.
It should be noted that the decision to end development aid was taken after the closure of the Swedish embassy in Bamako, but also because of the deteriorating security situation in the country.
It comes at a time of tension between Ukraine and Mali. Mali accuses Ukraine of supporting terrorist groups during the July 25-27 clashes with Malian armed forces.
This murderous attack led Mali to break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine, calling it a terrorist state.
